Benjamin Leighton "Ben" Matlock is a renowned, folksy yet cantankerous defense attorney who is worth every penny of his $100,000 fee. Known for visiting the scene of the crime to discover clues otherwise overlooked and his down-home style of coming up with viable, alternative theories of the crime in question (usually murder) while sitting in his office playing the banjo or polishing his shoes. Matlock also had conspicuously finicky fashion sense (wears nothing but grey suits), and an insatiable appetite for hot dogs. Despite his high fees and apparent wealth, he is something of a cheapskate. He is played by Andy Griffith.
Played by Linda Purl, Charlene Matlock is the daughter of Ben Matlock and is also a lawyer. She assisted her father at his law practice in Atlanta for a short time, appearing only in the first season of the series. Purl replaced Lori Lethin who appeared as Charlene in the pilot "Diary of a Perfect Murder".
Leanne MacIntyre is the daughter of Ben Matlock. After divorcing her husband, of whom her father did not much approve, she moved back to Atlanta to help him with his legal practice. She assisted her father for three years before leaving for her own practice. During that time, she worked with her father on numerous cases, including defending him on one occasion. They once found themselves on opposite sides of a divorce case, though she also defended her father in a personal injury case simultaneously during the same episode. Leanne used the same courtroom techniques her father used at times, which often resulted in her clients being proven innocent.
Laura Miller is the goddaughter of Ben Matlock. The last time she saw her godfather was 11 years prior to her wedding, at her mother's funeral. She no longer lived in Mt. Harlan at this point, instead working in an Atlanta-area mall in a clothing store as an assistant manager in Marietta. When she came back, she had not met his daughter, Leanne MacIntyre. Her parents owned a bakery. She intended to marry Paul (portrayed by Robert Praigo), a teacher from Mt. Harlan, whose dad was a veterinarian.
Julie March is the assistant D.A. of Atlanta, and a good friend of Ben Matlock. After a chance meeting with Ben Matlock in an elevator, the two hit it off, and Matlock was surprised to learn that she would be the prosecutor for the case he was working on. The two lawyers soon became friends, though their relationship was never really defined much further than that, and upon Julie's return in "The Confession", she revealed she had feelings for him.
Michelle Thomas is Ben Matlock's assistant. While working with Ben, she was approached by college classmate Andrea Morrow to defend her, after she was accused of killing her ex-husband. She also had a few dates with men. Prior to working on a case with Melinda Stuart, she dated Jed Palmer for a while. She also dated Arthur Saxon, Ben's corruptive client who was found innocent of not killing Robby Moore. While in Chicago, she also worked with writer Paul O'Neill, who helped her boss out in the murder of Mayor Brian Barelli, when popular court officer, Judge Stuart Franklin hired Eddie Lomax in killing both the mayor and Joseph Chan. Hence, he was found guilty, after the actual killer was murdered himself.
Geraldine Margaret "Jerri" Stone is an assistant who worked for Ben Matlock in the last season of the television series Matlock. She had a forthright style, once even jabbing her foot into a man's foot who was looking through some files while investigating a murder. Jerri also enjoyed singing old songs with Ben on occasion. She drove a blue Ford SUV.
Tyler Hudson is a private investigator for Ben Matlock. Before working for Matlock, Tyler was a lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He was interested in cooking and investing in venture capital projects on the side, such as in pecans. In the episode "The Chef", he said he entered the Junior Chamber of Commerce Chili Cook-Off, in the episode in which he won $2,000 for his chili. It was a Victoria Edwards recipe: chili with chicken, peanut butter sauce, and a few secret ingredients. Tyler rarely missed Victoria Edward's TV cooking show.
Conrad McMasters is a private investigator for Ben Matlock. Before working for Ben Matlock, he worked as a deputy sheriff in Manteo, where Matlock met him in hopes to figure out whether if Spencer Hamilton killed his brother.
Conrad also told Ben he went Christmas shopping in his hometown of Manteo to purchase gifts for his friends and his boss. He was also partnered and had a few dates with women.
On "The Informer", Conrad worked with Ben's client's partner/investigator, Angela Page, to work on a case on the night one of David's clients got murdered. After Matlock's client abruptly firing Angela, she turned to Conrad, who would then figure out who actually killed Sam Chandler, while traveling in Jacksonville, who happened to be Al Brackman.
When Matlock sent him to Chicago to talk to Sherry Brown in questioning her about the negatives he was supposed to find, he received word that she died from jumping off the apartment building.
In "The Cover Girl", he had a short fling with Carla Royce, a model. She revealed that her boss Jackie Whitman, the head of a modeling agency, was a control freak, and always had to have the last word in everything, which Carla found to be infuriating. However, Conrad broke up with her before she was found guilty of the murder of Jackie.
When watching the credits for "The Game Show", he talked his partner/friend, Michelle Thomas, into calling his other friend, Marjorie Wood, in hopes of being a contestant on the show.
While hanging at a bar, he had a drink with one of the suspects, Anne Johnson, for the afternoon, just one night after the murder. Her ex-boyfriend, Dwayne Meeks, was murdered after she caught him cheating on her. Of course, Anne was found innocent. His other friend, Lorraine Ortega (aka Cissy Lockwood), the bartender, wasn't.
Cliff Lewis is an attorney who worked for Ben Matlock during the 7th and 8th seasons of the show, but was described as Ben Matlock's friend in the late 8th season episode, "The Godfather", until the series' end. He lied once to the people from Mt. Harlan, saying he was a full partner with Ben, but he later confessed that Ben Matlock doesn't have any partners. Cliff was the son of Billy Lewis, Matlock's high school girlfriend's brother, who he known back in Mt. Harlan.
